Answers

  1. [Q] What are the system requirements for EmNOC ?

[A] R2.0 is available for running on windows based machines. A linux version will be available soon.

We have tested EmNOC on Windows 2000, XP, Vista.

We have tested with browsers IE 7, IE8, Firefox 3. [Back to the top]

  2. [Q] Is the EmNOC R2.0 really free and not a trial version ?

[A] The product is completely free for you to use in a commercial or non-commercial environment.

There is no other limit on functionality. There are no advertising screens, popups or other forms of "nagging".

If you wish to have commercial support then contact sales [Back to the top]

  3. [Q] The EmNOC does not have the MIB I want -- where can I find it ?

[A] The EmNOC is shipped with many hundreds of MIBs pre-loaded. If there is one it does not have please let us know by e-mailing support AT emnico DOT com.

You can then take a look at our on-line MIB Repository at http://www.emnico.com/mib.

If in the unusual event you cannot find it there -- check out the manufacturers web site. The name of the manufacturer of the device is provided in the "Device List" on the main EmNOC discovery list page and on the EmNOC discovery map page. [Back to the top]

  4. [Q] Can I run the EmNOC on the same machine as IIS or Apache ?

[A] Yes you can, but you must ensure that the EmNOC does not use the same port number as is being used for the IIS, Apache or other web server.

By default EmNOC runs on port 8080. Use the options menu from the tray icon to change which port number is used. You may need to restart the service after performing this operation.

Use the tray icon to run the browser to connect to EmNOC with the correct port number. [Back to the top]

  5. [Q] How can I get more information from my windows server ?

[A] You can enable some optional Microsoft software on the server that will give EmNOC more detailed information.

More details can be found in this How-To.

Once completed, you can simply do a re-discover and EmNOC will be able to view, explore and monitor administrative information. [Back to the top]

  6. [Q] Does EmNOC install any software on the machines I wish to look at or monitor ?

    [A] No

Some manufacturers call this agent-less. EmNOC only accesses information that is already available on the machines it discovers. [Back to the top]

  7. [Q] The discovery does not seem very fast when using a 64-bit OS ?

[A] You need to copy a library. Copy the following file into the system32 drivers directory.

    C:\Program Files\Emnico\EmNOC\windows\system32\drivers\npf-x64.sys

    needs to go to

    \windows\system32\drivers\npf.sys

Once the driver file has been copied, the EmNOC service needs to be restarted. To do this open up Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services.

Select the "Emnico Technologies EmNOC Service" from the list, and then choose the "Restart the service" option.

Once the service has restarted select the EmNOC shortcut on the desktop or refresh your browser window if already open and re-discover. [Back to the top]

  8. [Q] The web page seems to stick on loading EmNOC ?

[A] This has only ever been seen with IE and very rarely with Firefox.

First try the browser refresh...if you see the message again, you will need to clear the browsers cache.

On the IE browser select Tools->Browsing History... then select the options Delete Files and Delete History. On Firefox use Tools->Clear Private Data. [Back to the top]

  9. [Q]I get a message saying EmNOC server not available ?

[A] Try refreshing the browser window. If that does not work check that the EmNOC service is running. Right-Click the mouse key over the EmNOC tray icon and select "Start Service...".

Once started, try refreshing the browser page again. [Back to the top]

  10. [Q] Why can't I start or stop the EmNOC service from the EmNOC tray-icon menu?

[A] You need to use an administrator account to start or stop Windows services; if you try to use these commands, Windows will prompt you to input an administrator password. If you don't have one, it will not be able to start or stop the service. [Back to the top]

  11. [Q] Why does the EmNOC splash-screen say "Cannot start EmNOC Service. See the EmNOC FAQ for help"?

    [A] See previous answer.

Alternatively, it could be that someone has disabled the EmNOC service on your computer. Look in the Services control panel, and if the Startup Type of the EmNOC service is Disabled you need to set it to Automatic. [Back to the top]

  12. [Q] I don't see the EmNOC tray icon ?

[A] If you do not see the EmNOC system-tray icon after installing EmNOC, it may be because you do not have the Microsoft .NET framework (V2.0) installed. This is required for the EmNOC system-tray icon to run, and is available through Windows Updates, or directly from Microsoft at
