Q: Should I choose Windows Mobile or Blackberry?

A: This is a question we get asked a lot. Depending on your
current IT network; if you have a mobile workforce and how important being able to access information any time is, should determine the most appropriate device.

I will address what I believe are the key considerations for anyone who is looking to make this decision:

Email ? Up until recently Blackberry had one up on Windows
Mobile in that you could view threaded messages. However the latest release of Windows Mobile now has this functionality. The advantage Windows Mobile has is that your emails look just like you would see on your PC in the office.

Scheduling - Windows Mobile integrates seamlessly with Small Business Server and Exchange Server 2007. 90% of companies have these types of IT networks and is a real benefit to SMBs with limited IT resources. Blackberry's do not work on these servers and have their own operating platforms.

Documents ? you can view Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents on both devices; however you can only edit such documents using a Windows Mobile device.

Running costs ? these are almost identical with data charges negligible; however you need to look at the Total Cost of Ownership.

As mentioned above ? 90% of businesses already have the IT
hardware in place to support the addition of Windows Mobile
devices therefore you just need to enable the service. Blackberry however relies on a 3rd party (RIM) or if there are enough users in the business you should have a Blackberry Exchange Server. This is an additional piece of hardware to purchase and maintain.

You should also be aware of other phones such as the iPhone and Google's Android phone. Like anything some products have better features in one area but lack features in other areas.

It's the overall package you should be looking at including utilising everything you currently have at your disposal.

Whatever decision you choose you need to ensure your Business Technology Partner can support you by giving you advice, assist with identifying and implementing the solution and providing on-going support.
