Wiltshire Business - Advice Panel, IT Expert, December 2009 1 December 2009 Q: We have a legacy software package that helps run the business and want to look at what options we have to develop it further or even develop a new one? A: A number of businesses are looking at this area as part of the business planning for 2010 and beyond as they want to improve processes and where possible automate. Technology has evolved overtime making newer languages more scalable, robust and more secure. Depending on when the software was first developed and the language used to support it, is an important consideration. You could develop the existing software enhancing functionality and reporting services, whilst at the same time reviewing the code to ensure it is optimised to increase performance. This is often the most cost effective way to develop software and should be considered first and foremost. If you are considering starting afresh we would advise any business to look at what packages are available "off the shelf". These are often a fraction of the cost of developing something from new, have been tried and tested and in many cases bespoke functionality can be developed by your Software Development Company. Your Software Development Company can help with all of this including vendor selection and Technical Specification to ensure you are left with something that is fit for purpose and supports the business. With many businesses now accessing software over the internet this could be an area to explore. Not only will this save on the purchase of hardware but also ongoing maintenance and support. However, you are then relying on the internet connection for your main line of business software which could impact on its performance? Before any work commences you should get a full written Specification and Requirements document which will also outline timescales, minimum hardware required, broadband performance and deliverables. A statement on contingency, which should be capped at no more than 20% of the total development cost, should also be made to ensure that you are clear on what the total costs of such a project for the first development and implementation phase could be. Whichever option you choose your Technology Partner should be able to assist you with this process to ensure you are getting the most from the resources available to you. |
